Graffiti of "hip hop" in Eugene, Oregon

Hip hop is a form of musical expression and artistic culture that originated in African-American and Latinocommunities during the 1970s in New York City, specifically the Bronx.[1][2][3] DJ Afrika Bambaataaoutlined the four pillars of hip hop culture: MCing, DJing, breaking and graffiti writing.[4][5][6][7] Other elements include beatboxing.[8]

Since its emergence in the South Bronx, hip hop culture has spread around the world.[9] Hip hop musicfirst emerged with disc jockeys creating rhythmic beats by looping breaks (small portions of songs emphasizing a percussive pattern) on two turntables, more commonly referred to as sampling. This was later accompanied by "rap", a rhythmic style of chanting or poetry presented in 16 bar measures or time frames, and beatboxing, a vocal technique mainly used to imitate percussive elements of the music and various technical effects of hip hop DJ's. An original form of dancing and particular styles of dress arose among fans of this new music. These elements experienced considerable refinement and development over the course of the history of the culture.

The relationship between graffiti and hip hop culture arises from the appearance of new and increasingly elaborate and pervasive forms of the practice in areas where other elements of hip hop were evolving as art forms, with a heavy overlap between those who wrote graffiti and those who practiced other elements of the culture. Today, graffiti remains part of hip hop, while crossing into the mainstream art world with renowned exhibits in galleries throughout the world.

2012 is here and we have a great opportunity to glance back and plan forward. Why glance, why not sit back and take a good hard look at that Mixtape that didn't do so well or that track that did not live up to the concept you had in your head and just deride yourself for a missed opportunity.

That's not what the new year should be about.

I'm not saying we shouldn't learn from our mistakes what I do take exception to is using it as an excuse to slow down or give up. Failure is one of the greatest gifts any of us can be given and should be celebrated.

World class DJ's, Artist and Sound Systems never see failure as a signal to throw in the towel. It's simply another step in the progress towards their goal. There is stigma attached to temporary setbacks that have totally programmed the public's minds into thinking it is the end of your dream.

Our dreams end only when we give up. Goals are never achieved in a straight path but in the most convoluted of ways sometimes. So 2012 is about not focusing on our mistakes because that can only bring more mistakes. Focus on your successes.

Everything that you have done that has worked out well for you is what you should reinforce in your mind. Of course you will have more failures than successes but it's your choice to make the wins more significant in your mind. You tend to attract what you focus on.

Just realize that failure is a necessary part of the path of the successful. Learn from them but remember we are not our mistakes.

Don't take it personal.

Whether you have been creating mixtapes, dubplates, riddims, albums, singles and you haven't made the impact you expected from your work, stop, re-evaluate and keep trying a new strategy until it does.

Results don't lie, pay attention to your results.

Until next t
ime.
